Grier's painting classes are offered at various levels. For many students, Grier's art offerings represent an introduction to a richness of art that was never before offered in school. For this reason, it is not unusual for a girl who thinks she doesn't like art because she "can't draw" can find herself fully involved in art at Grier and perhaps even in classes based on an ability to draw.
Water-based painting is taught by Mrs. Kim-Lambert and oil painting is taught by Mrs. Cave. Both teachers feel very strongly about teaching to the whole student. This is through discussion of historical painting and by instruction in color theory, light and shade, and perspective for the painter. Grier's scenic setting can serve to inspire students in their work as it provides ample subject matter and inspiration.
Watercolor
The watercolor course is designed to introduce watermedia techniques such as watercolor, tempera, acrylic painting, as well as an introduction to drawing. Through visual examples and demonstrations students learn to think and paint in more creative and experimental ways.
Oil Painting
This course teaches graphing for enlargement and basic through advanced skills. By using creative color techniques, students explore the nature of the medium.
Drawing
This is not always a seperate course, but is incorporated in all of the Painting classes.
