Music Instructors

The music department is made up of two full time and eight part time instructors:

Barb NeumullerBarbara Reeves Neumuller received her Bachelor of Arts from Penn State University with a major in Music Theory. She continued at Penn State as a graduate assistant in theory, earning her Masters of Fine Arts with a major in Music Composition. She studied piano with Steven Smith and clarinet with Smith Toulson throughout her Penn State years, and performed with the Penn State choirs, Blue Band and Wind Ensemble.While still in graduate school, Barbara began teaching private clarinet lessons at the Music Academy in State College. She continued to teach there for the next 20 years, adding piano and theory to her teaching schedule as she raised two daughters at home. At the same time, she performed and recorded with an original rock band, Archie Blue, lead by jazz pianist Arthur Goldstein. In 1981 the group recorded an album with producer Van Dyke Parks who is best known for his collaborations with Beach Boys' Brian Wilson. As head of the music department at Grier since 1997, Barbara teaches piano, clarinet, drums, theory and music technology. She also directs the Chamber Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble and Rock Band and is instrumental music director for the yearly Grier School musicals.

 

111022GingerGinger Reinhardt hails from Montana where she grew up in a rural farming community. After graduating from high school, she attended Montana State University-Billings with a double major in elementary education and music education. Ginger earned several awards in singing competitions including Montana Teachers National Association, National Association of Teachers of Singing, as well as the university's Musician of the Year award.

Ms. Reinhardt graduated with two degrees in education and accepted a graduated teaching position at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, where she taught applied voice while studying voice under Donna Harler-Smith. While attending UNL, she performed with the University Singers with whom she toured in several states and made her solo premiere at Carnegie Hall. She participated in several operas and musical theater productions including Die Fledermaus, Street Scene, and My Fair Lady. She was Susanna in the university's production of The Marriage of Figaro, Sarah in Guys and Dolls, Cinderella in Into the Woods, and Amalia in the world premiere of Stork Derby.

After graduating with a Masters in Music (vocal performance), Ginger moved to Connecticut where she taught music and choir at Hall Memorial School for three years. She also taught courses at the University of Connecticut's Community School of the Arts and maintained a private vocal studio. Ginger directed Hall School's production of Honk! and performed the role of Judy/Ginger in Ruthless with the Broad Brook Opera House.

Agatha WangJui-Chih Agatha Wang has been a resident of State College, PA since the fall of 2001, where she teaches flute and piano, performs on the flute, and accompanies performers from the Penn State School of Music.

A native of Taiwan, her formal training includes the Republic of China's special musical education program for gifted students (grades 3-12), a BA in Music from Fu-Jen Catholic University, and an MA in Flute Performance from New York University, where she studied with Keith Underwood. She has performed with the Kaohsiung City Symphony Orchestra, the Nan-Yeen Symphony Orchestra, the Seoul Symphony Orchestra, and the Nittany Valley Symphony Orchestra. Agatha taught flute extensively in Taiwan, and now teaches flute and directs the Flute Ensemble at Grier, and has a private flute studio in State College.

 

Darcy Wilson Darcy Wilson, originally from St. Marys, PA, came to the Grier School music department after receiving a B.S. in Music Education from Indiana University of PA in 1989. Darcy met and married Andrew Wilson, who was teaching Spanish at the time, and began raising a family on campus. Darcy transferred her teaching energies to a private vocal studio in her home and then pursued other interests. Currently she teaches voice part-time.

Darcy brings to the department her love of music and especially her background in musical theater. A veteran of the Tyrone Community Players, she has performed in many shows. Leading roles include Jennifer in Shelby in The Spitfire Grill, Jennifer in I Love You You're Perfect, Now Change, Nancy in Oliver!, Jeannie Garstecki in The Great American Trailer Park Musical, Sisters Robert Anne and Mary Amnesia in several Nunsense musicals, Portia in Cinderella, Kaye in The Taffetas Reunion, Agnes in the two-person musical I Do, I Do!, Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, Louise (Gypsy Rose Lee) in Gypsy, Nellie in South Pacific, Cinderella in Into the Woods and Irene Malloy in Hello, Dolly. Performances in non-musicals include M'Lynn in Steel Magnolias and Gillian Holroyd in Bell, Book and Candle, among others. She also music directed Tyrone's productions of Gypsy, Pippin, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and has participated in many children's theater performances and cabarets.

Darcy is also a soloist, choir director and accompanist at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in State College. There, and on stage in Tyrone, she has performed numerous compositions of her own. She is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).


kylan simpson

Kylan Simpson spent the first 27 years of her life in sunny San Diego.  She began her violin studies at the age of 7 and worked with some of the finest teachers in Southern California, including Vi Panman, Lois Owsley and Michael and Irina Tseitlin.  As a teenager Kylan won a scholarship to attend the International Music School in Marktoberdorf, Germany.  She earned her BA in Violin Performance from California Baptist University.  While still in San Diego Kylan met and married her husband, Andrew, who is a wonderful cellist and bass player.  Four years ago they moved to State College so Andrew could go back to school at Penn State.  Andrew earned his Master’s in Cello Performance and now teaches strings in the Altoona elementary schools.  They have both enjoy performing for Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra and the Altoona Symphony.  Together they run a wedding music business called Corinthian Wedding Duo.  Kylan has been teaching privately for over 16 years and now teaches over 20 students in their home in Altoona.  Their labradoodle, Luis, is the fuzziest and cutest dog in the US, if not the whole world.

 

Greg Folsom
After graduating from the Pennsylvania State University in 1995, Greg Folsom enjoyed a daytime position at the Music Mart in downtown State College, developing his skills in operation, sales, maintenance & instruction of musical instruments and equipment. He continues to play professionally in venues up and down the East Coast from New England to Key West, Florida, and as far west as Wisconsin and even the occasional show in California.

Mr. Folsom has been giving private lessons on all types of bass and guitar since 2001. In 2005 he began teaching bass guitar at the Grier School, later branching out into electric and acoustic guitar as the student demand for lessons increased. Cathy ScafidiCathy Scafidi grew up in San Diego, CA and was raised by musical parents, both graduates of The Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Her father, Arthur Clarke, a violinist, played with The San Diego Symphony as assistant concertmaster. Her mother, Eula Clarke, a pianist, still teaches in Southern California and was Cathy's first instructor. Cathy started piano lessons at age five and after studying with her mother until age eleven, went to study with Florence Stephenson until the end of high school. During school years, Cathy was active in playing in recitals, entering competitions and accompanying soloists and school choirs. She received two scholarships from The Musical Merit Foundation of San Diego and was chosen twice to play in The Music Teachers Association of California State Convention. She was also chosen to be a member of The Music Teachers Association of California Young Artists Guild.

Cathy received a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Jack Radunsky and Sedmara Rutshstein. She has been teaching piano for over twenty-five years to students of all ages and levels. In addition to teaching at The Grier School, Cathy also currently teaches at Juniata College in Huntingdon and The Music Academy in State College. She has lived in Central PA since 1994.
