Artist-in-Residence Inspires Collaboration

Art students in Mrs. Laurie Cave's classes had the opportunity to work under the tutelage of visiting artist Alex Zak for an entire week this October. With Zak, students expressed themselves creatively through printmaking and fiber art installations that included rope-making.
Zak has a art education from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he worked in Admissions following his graduation, and experience working as an artist in New York City, where he now resides.

After a few seconds of speaking with him, it is plain to see that Zak is passionate about art, the process of making art, and sharing his experience with others. As the students learned to wind beautiful and colorful ropes from a variety of textiles, they discussed aspects of their identities and their lives at Grier. In this way, their emotions and their selves became part of the ropes, interwoven with found objects.

The week ended with a group rope-making project in each class, resulting in beautiful, tactile pieces of art.
