GENERAL INFORMATION

The Summer TOEFL-ESL Program is an eight-week intensive program that integrates not only ESL, TOEFL, and SAT instruction, but also a thorough study of the “English Language” of Mathematics (Calculus AB and BC), Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environment Science), as well as History (U.S./World History and Economics). The Summer Program targets three basic goals: first, to raise the TOEFL and SAT scores of our students to meet the requirements of highly competitive American colleges and universities; second, to help our students meet the requirements as outlined for the many rigorous English, History, Mathematics, and Science Honors and AP courses offered during the academic year at Grier; third, to provide students with challenging and varied extracurricular activities (horseback riding, dance, art, music, swimming, sports) and several day and overnight cultural outings (New York City, Washington, Baltimore, Cedar Point, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater).

Students attend five hours daily of classroom instruction with a two-hour supervised study four evenings a week. The student to teacher ratio in the Summer Program is 8:1, or lower, to provide for individualized instruction. A variety of materials, up-to-date language learning techniques as well as electronic instruction are used to provide a comprehensive preparation program. All teachers are native speakers. Frank Lambert, the Summer TOEFL-ESL Program Director holds degrees from the University of California at Berkeley (M.A.), Middlebury College (B.A.), and is ESL Certified (Scotland).

A student is placed in ESL classes based on her English ability as measured by the SLEP test of English or administered at Grierl or by the TOEFL Test administered by ETS. There are four ESL levels at Grier. Students who score in the 99 percentile on the SLEP Test or get a score of 60 on the TOEFL are automatically "mainstreamed" into regular or honors English classes.

SLEP Test (Forms 4, 5, 6): correlation of scores & levels

53-60 86-98 ESL IV

50-52 76-85 ESL III

41-51 50-75 ESL II
