Summer Journalism Experience with NYT

with Hoa N. '20
Many Grier students enjoy sharing with the wider Grier community the rewarding experiences they had during the summer months. Hoa N. ‘20 is one such student. She took a journalism course while attending a program through The School of the The New York Times.
The two-week course called “Writing in the Big City,” is a journalism class that focused on environmental sustainability topics. “Under the instruction of former New York Times editor Mary Ann Giodano, our class visited [...] the Sims Recycling Center, the neighborhood of Brooklyn, [...] the lovely community gardens of the Lower East Side and the City Hall,” writes Hoa.  At City Hall, Hoa and her classmates interviewed and listened to green activists, a city legislator, and environmental education coordinators as they described the efforts they are making toward a sustainable and zero-waste New York. Although she focused on reporting about sustainability efforts, Hoa also learned how New York’s urban planning is rapidly developing and how gentrification has overtaken most of the city’s inner neighborhoods. She learned about many effective recycling programs across the nation, as well as, learning about Pennsylvania’s own recycling legislation. With this information, Hoa says she hopes she can help “make Grier a greener space than it already is!”

Reflecting on her experience with The New York Times, Hoa writes, “Who would ever think one could do so much in a span of two weeks!  But in such a [brief] amount of time, I was given the experience closest to that of a real New Yorker: constantly moving, constantly learning, and constantly connecting.”
