Summer in the Windy City
Grier Senior Rachel P. spent a week in Chicago this summer where she attended a program in Medical Ethics through Loyola University. In last year’s English 11, Rachel got a taste of Medical Ethics doing a research paper in conjunction with the novel Frankenstein and she was eager to learn more about this fascinating topic. Grier’s Science courses, including Psychology, examine medical ethics questions as well.
While attending the program, Rachel lived in the dorms with a roommate, at regular meals in the dining halls, and participated in on-campus activities and field trips, much like she does at Grier. The major difference was the city life, which involved extensive walking. Rachel’s off-campus explorations included downtown Chicago, Navy Pier, and Millennium Park. During a special class field trip, her class visited the Shirley-Ryan Ability Lab where she toured the facility and even met a current patient. Two women with degrees in Medical Ethics gave a presentation about their journeys.
Rachel participates in Varsity Riding along with many other activities at Grier. She is outgoing and friendly, making conversation with her peers as they visit the Coffee Barn where she works part time. All of this, plus her dedication and skill behind the lens, makes her an invaluable photographer for Grier’s Pine Needle Yearbook and Grier’s online media.
