Pastel Workshop with Artist in Residence
Following the success of last year’s Artist in Residence, Grier was honored to have artist Susan Nicholas return for a week-long pastel workshop. Grier students had the opportunity to try out the different papers and pastels to explore the play of colors. Then, students used photographs of landscapes, portraits, paintings, and more as inspiration for finished pieces.
Nicholas is an award-winning landscape artist who shares her mastery and love of plein air pastels and oil paints with others through workshops and retreats. She demonstrated how artists can create completely different looks with pastels by using different colored papers and by choosing a smooth or rough textured paper. The students and art faculty alike were delighted to have Nicholas visit! Their color studies and finished pieces are on display in Grier's Art Studio.
