Best Practices for Happiness at Home

For many in the Grier community, learning and working from home may be a new experience. School psychologist Dr. Christopher Thurber outlines seven best practices for maintaining health and well-being during this time. These practices can fortify happiness and efficiency.
 
Dress for Success - While it’s generally not necessary to dress in formal attire, making the point to put on clean, fresh clothing each day and following a basic daily personal care routine helps each of us to maintain our positive self-concept.  Our performance is linked to our positive self-concept, which is why they say, “Dress for Success!”

Sit Like a Pro - Find a workspace that allows you to best minimize distractions and increase your focus. If your home is busy, negotiate some quiet hours with your family. Generally, working from a proper chair and table will offer better ergonomics, or efficiency while minimizing discomfort, but everyone is different. 

Move It! - Whether indoors or outside, find a way to elevate your heart rate for 30 minutes each day to improve your mood and energy!  There are many exercise programs online and even just climbing the stairs in your home can get your heart pumping! 

Taste the Rainbow - Getting a rainbow’s worth of colorful fruits, vegetables, and other nutrient-packed foods can help your body maintain steady metabolism, which means stabilized focus and energy. Avoid extra sugar and caffeine that mess with your metabolism and often leave you feeling crummy.

Make & Keep a Daily Routine - Even though our schedules may be more flexible than they used to be, keeping a routine gives us a feeling of predictability, which really helps us emotionally in these uncertain times.  Knowing when you will work and when you will relax helps you maintain motivation. 

Connect with Each Other - Humans crave connections with each other and we may be missing our daily dose of human interaction. Reach out to friends, family, and teachers through messages, video chats, email, and even old-fashioned letters!

Keep Sleep - People often overlook the importance of deep, restorative sleep. Healthy sleep habits boost our immune system, ward off brain fog, help maintain mental health, reduce unhealthy cravings, and balance our moods. 

Grier’s motto is mens sana in corpore sano, which means “a sound mind in a sound body.” Following this advice can help teachers, parents, and students alike feel their best and perform well, even under our current circumstances. Even away from Grier, we can keep our minds and bodies healthy!
