Woman of the Week: Maryam Mirzakhani, Mathematician

In addition to weekly world celebrations, Bridge Club members also presented a Woman of the Week. Every Friday, a Bridge Club member would tell a brief story of one courageous woman in history. This week’s Woman of the Week is Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani.
As a teenager in Tehran, Iran, Maryam won gold medals in the International Mathematical Olympiads two years in a row. She received a PhD from Harvard University and was a professor at Stanford University. She found joy in finding elegant solutions to the geometry of complex surfaces. Her contributions to math were recognized in 2014 when she was awarded the Fields Medal. She was the first Iranian and the first woman in history to win this most prestigious honor!
