Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of VE Day
This Friday, May 8th, marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. This day, known as Victory in Europe Day, or VE Day, was when the Allied forces officially announced Germany’s surrender. In France, where the initial military surrender occurred in Reims on May 7th, the day is known as “Victoire 1945.” Past milestone anniversaries of VE Day have been celebrated with parades and festivities, but due to the pandemic this year, those wishing to celebrate the historic date must make alternative plans.
In the UK, where VE Day is widely celebrated, the nation will hold a moment of silence at 11am, and then a National Toast to the Heroes of WW2 at 3pm, with people across the UK standing to thank and honor the countless people that helped defend against and defeat Nazi Germany. Many people will decorate their houses in patriotic colors, and enjoy a broadcast of military planes flying by Buckingham Palace, listening to music of the era, and many other ways to remember the significant day.
For many that experienced it, WWII was a time of personal sacrifice, fear, and honoring brave heroes. While the COVID-19 pandemic does not equate the horrors of world war, many of us are currently making sacrifices, if only small ones, dealing with fears of the unknown, and celebrating the brave heroes of today. In that sense, we can connect with the generation of 75 years prior.
The video below shows some clips of people celebrating in London. Do you think we will have a similar celebration of victory over SARS-CoV-2 when it is once again safe to celebrate together?
This year, Bridge Club initiated regular celebrations of global holidays at Grier. Members of Bridge Club took turns sharing information about holidays celebrated around the world during Monday morning school assemblies, and Grier’s Dining Services provided a special treat after school in honor of each holiday. With the whole Grier community now connected virtually, we’re celebrating the Bridge Club Holiday of the Week online.
