College Prep Continues
Along with high quality academic courses, Grier continues to offer college preparatory support and opportunities for its students. This is accomplished largely by the College Counseling Department and dedicated faculty teachers.
Prior to the official start of classes, this August, Grier hosted a special Enrichment session that focused on strengthening skills needed to perform well on the SAT exam. The program was led by Grier teachers certified to teach the Princeton Review course.
Throughout the school year, the College Counseling Department assists students in the college exploration and application process. Ms. Kingera heads the College Counseling Department and is joined by Ms. Barr. These counselors help students identify colleges that are a good fit academically and socially through self-evaluation. Through individual meetings and structured small group seminars, they educate Grier students on the college admissions process and how to use the resources available to them for their college search.
To supplement our college advising, all students meet with their college counselor yearly to discuss their academic goals. In this meeting, students and counselors review the student’s academic record, discuss their post high school plans, and choose courses for the following year. Though students are responsible for the completion of their applications, they receive assistance through weekly individual meetings and application workshops.
Counselors also facilitate opportunities for students to meet with representatives from a wide variety of colleges and universities. In the current conditions, many representatives are meeting with students over virtual conferencing platforms, such as Zoom. Organizations like NACAC are making their popular college fairs available online.
Grier students have the support they need to be accepted into colleges. For a recent list of college acceptances, visit our College Counseling page.
