Happy Inauguration Day: Celebrating Women's History!

In honor of the inauguration of the first ever female Vice President of the United States on today, January 20, 2021, Grier students had opportunities to witness the events of the day and to celebrate women’s suffrage and the role of women in politics by wearing yellow roses, a symbol of support for women’s suffrage.
Members of Bridge Club distributed the yellow roses to students and teachers along with a note explaining the historical significance of the day and giving a glimpse of the bravery of American women of the past.

“Women in America marched, petitioned, and protested for decades to win the right to vote. Some were imprisoned. Some were beaten. Some went on a hunger strike and were forcibly fed by the government. But women won. In 1920, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was formally adopted, and American women won a right that was long overdue.”

Not only is Kamala Harris the first female Vice President of the United States, but she is also a woman of color. Over 100 years after US women first gained the right to vote, a daughter of immigrants of African and South Asian heritage fills the second highest position in the nation.

Mrs. Borst plans to provide interested students with opportunities to witness this historical moment via televisions and streaming media.

There are several opportunities through network news to view inauguration coverage of the history-making inauguration, including "Our White House," produced for young viewers by the Biden Inaugural Committee and streaming at 10am ET.

Additionally, some students will enjoy watching the primetime television event titled "Celebrating America" that begins at 8:30pm on several networks and social media channels like YouTube.  This event features celebrities , musicians, and special segments of young people making a difference in their communities.

Thank you Bridge Club for leading the school in cheering for women and people of color. Grier girls will wear their yellow roses with pride to celebrate this historic day!
