Sustainable Sisters Speak with Local Leader

Members of Sustainable Sisters Club are dedicated students in search of broadening their understanding of climate change, environmental issues, and sustainability. In previous years, the members focused their efforts on getting reusable and recyclable drinkware and straws for the campus Coffee House. The club also launched Plant Rich Mondays, a once-a-month plant-centered meal in the Dining Room.
This year, the club is connecting via Zoom once a week and hosting guest speakers. The most recent speaker was Joan Bouchard, member of the Pennsylvania Sierra Club Moshannon Group and environmental activist. Ms. Bouchard worked as a history teacher and many years as a financial planner before dedicating ten years of her retirement to educate Hondurans about the water cycle and helping to plant trees to mitigate drought conditions. She vice-chairs the Recycling Committee in her retirement community, has coordinated the local electric bus outreach, and much more!

The members in attendance enjoyed hearing from Ms. Bouchard and look forward to more guest speakers, expressing an interest in topics relating to nutrition/food and the environment, social justice and the environment, getting involved, and methods of reducing our carbon footprint.

At a recent meeting, club members proposed activities, such as helping with local stream maintenance, rain gardens,  the eradication of invasive plants, and creating a walking tour of Grier campus featuring the amazing diversity of trees on the grounds. While looking at issues that affect the world, they are focusing on what they can accomplish right in their own backyard.

Sustainable Sisters is one of many clubs at Grier. Although we’ve had to make some changes to how our clubs operate, Grier girls still find ways to connect with each other and pursue a wide variety of hobbies and interests.
