Grier Gives Back at Fall Fun Fair for Blind Awareness

This month, Grier students volunteered their time at the Blair/Clearfield Association for the Blind’s Fall Fun Day. The event promoted awareness of visual impairments in a fun, family atmosphere that featured festive fall-themed games, crafts, and other activities.
Grier strives to help students understand the importance of generosity and helping build communities. For this reason, Grier Giving Back’s community service program facilitates frequent opportunities for students to volunteer.

Grier has partnered with The Blair/Clearfield Association for the Blind (BCAB) for many years, with Grier students dedicating many volunteer hours toward assisting this organization in a variety of ways. Some activities take place her on the Grier campus. For instance, student volunteers stuff, seal, and sort envelopes for the associations giving campaign. Students also collect unwanted and discarded items at the end of each school year to donate to the Association’s annual yard sale fundraiser. In other cases, the volunteering takes place off-campus. Students have assembled sandwiches at Imler’s Poultry in Duncansville for the Ham & Cheese Sandwich Sale fundraiser. The Fall Fun Day was another such off-campus event.

For the Fall Fun Day, our students traveled with Mrs. Kelley to Legion Park in Hollidaysburg. There, the students assisted the BCAB team with the annual event. In addition to supporting and educating community members with visual impairments, part of the BCAB’s mission is to advocate for services and rights of individuals with visual impairments. The Fall Fun Fest is one way the organization achieves this by inviting local families to enjoy playing carnival games, winning prizes, creating crafts, and more. This year, Grier student Judy L. even donned the BCAB mascot costume, a dog named “Reckless.”
