Grier Enters Math Competition at Juniata College
On Thursday, February 15th, twenty-four Grier students competed in the Mathematics Association of America’s American Mathematics Competition (MAA AMC). The secondary school competitions are held on the same two days at locations across the nation. The Grier students traveled by school bus to Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania to compete and learn from math educators affiliated with the college.
The students could choose between two tests of math ability based on their grade level. According to the MAA AMC website, both the 10th and 12th grade exams include 25 multiple choice questions to be answered in 75 minutes. The questions are “designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills.” Sophomore Emma W. said, “the questions weren’t really hard, but they were tricky!”
These tests are the first in a series of competitions that culminate in the International Mathematical Olympiad. The Grier students who competed today will have to wait to learn how they fared, as Emma noted that the results were not announced immediately.
Parents of Grier freshman Liza worked in the college’s math department and assisted with organizing the competition for the region. Liza’s mother, an instructor at Juniata, gave a keynote speech to competitors about the mathematics of folding papers into thirds, fifths, and so on. It was a great day for students to develop their problem-solving skills. When they returned to campus, the girls proudly put on their MAA AMC t-shirts for a group photo op.
UPDATE: The scores from the Mathematics Association of America’s American Mathematics Competition (MAA AMC) are in and Grier is ecstatic to announce that four of our #GrierGirls had top scores! April H. and Cindy W. were the top two scorers on the AMC 10, while Amy T. and Quin N. were the top two scorers for the AMC 12. Congratulations to April, Cindy, Amy, and Quin, and to everyone who competed in the event.
