Spotlight on Grier English Teacher Ms. Kara Lawler

Grier is home to many remarkable faculty members who have success both in and out of the classroom. Teacher of AP English and Creative Writing at Grier, Ms. Kara Lawler is one such teacher. In addition to classroom teaching, at Grier, Ms. Lawler is largely responsible for the Writing Center, Senior Prom, and organizing guest writer workshops, such as the poetry workshop with Gabriel Welsch in February. Outside of Grier, Ms. Lawler is a writer and an active community member.
Ms. Lawler is serving as a panelist for a discussion about federal family leave policies. The panel discussion follows the first Pennsylvania screening of the documentary film Zero Weeks. This free, public screening will be held at Penn State’s University Park campus in State College, Pennsylvania at 6pm on Tuesday, February 20th in Freeman Auditorium of the HUB-Robeson Center. The film explores the topic of paid family leave in the United States, how this differs dramatically from other developed nations, and the consequences that result.

Ms. Lawler will join others on the discussion panel, including Regan Long with whom Ms. Lawler co-authored the parenting book A Letter For Every Mother, coming out in April 2018 and available for pre-order now. In addition, Ms. Lawler writes for her spiritual parenting website Mothering the Divide and contributes essays and articles to other media outlets across the web, including The Huffington Post, The Today Show, Parenting.com, Scary Mommy, and Mamalode.

As Grier English Department Chair, Ms. Lawler believes that Grier’s English curriculum is the backbone of the curriculum at Grier School. Earnest Gaines once said, “The Six Golden Rules of Writing: Read, read, read, and write, write, write.” Grier English teachers focus on the writing process, and believe that through training in writing and composition, literature, grammar, and vocabulary, they prepare students well for studies at the postsecondary level. Every student is required to take at least one English class each year and may take additional electives when possible. While Grier’s English teachers seek to prepare students for university expectations, they also hope to instill a love of language and literature within the students who are in our classes.

Grier is fortunate to have Ms. Lawler and many other talented educators among our ranks.
