Spanish Classes Celebrate Dia de los Muertos
Spanish students in Sra. Liegel's classes celebrated the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos by creating and decorating sugar skulls. At the end of the day, the students placed the sugar skulls on display in an ofrenda, an offering, to the spirits of deceased ancestors. The students added flowers, salt, water, papel picado, fruit, and bread to the ofrenda, located in Nana's Place, a student lounge.
The project gave students in Spanish classes a hands-on opportunity to participate in an authentic tradition, still practiced today. While the students in Spanish class created the ofrenda, any student at Grier, including those of Mexican heritage, was invited to place photos of their deceased loved ones in the ofrenda, as is customary. The celebration of Dia de los Muertos provides an opportunity for the living to maintain a connection to their ancestors and keep their memories alive.
