Meet Grier Series - Meet Student Council Day Student Representative Gia S. '21!

At Grier School, we are proud of our diverse student community and culture. This year it is our goal to highlight our Grier Girls in their own words. Our new series, Meet Grier, introduces our students to our extended community while showcasing their achievements and stories.

In this Student Council Highlight, we're featuring Student Council Day Student Representative Gia S!

MEET GIA S. '21

  • Name: Gia S.
  • "Home" when you're not at Grier: Altoona, PA
  • Year: Senior
  • Years attended Grier: 5
  • Age/Grade started at Grier: 8th Grade

Why/How Did you decide to attend Grier?

My former school didn't offer a challenging environment academically, and I needed a place where I could learn at a level better suited for myself. The day after I had the discussion with my parents about it, they saw an ad for Grier in the newspaper, and the rest is history.

Why do you prefer the all-girls school environment?

For me personally, I experience a lot less anxiety in an all-girls environment. I feel more comfortable expressing when I need to ask questions in class, and overall feel more at ease. In general, it is a more empowering and encouraging environment than I have previously experienced at different schools.

Are you a member or officer of any clubs/organizations?

I am day student council officer for student council this year, and I participate in Model UN, Bridge Club, the Sustainable Sisters, and I have just joined NHS.

What has been your favorite memory or story from your time at Grier?

One of my favorite memories from my time at Grier is from last year, which was my junior year. I was sitting in Ms. Barr's English class next to one of my best friends, and Mr. Jefferson, who most of us had just had the period before, came in and started reciting and re-enacting his son's picture book, "Clippity Cloppity". It was a great performance.

What are you most excited about for this year?

I am most excited this year to spend as much time as possible with my friends. While I know we'll stay connected over the years, I know we have limited time where we'll see each other almost daily. I can't wait to make some final memories with them, and just enjoy our time together.

What is your favorite tradition at Grier and why?

One of my favorite traditions at Grier is the Halloween costume contest. I love seeing all the creative ideas everyone comes up with.

What advice or message would you share with future Grier Girls?

Pursue whatever you want, not what your family, friends, or society wants you to pursue. You'll be so much happier, and you'll quickly realize you're capable of doing more than you may have previously thought. Plus, at the end of the day, it's your life and not anyone else's!

Just for fun - what is your favorite class, quote, book, recipe, movie, tv show, or podcast?

My favorite book of all time is "
The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde! I highly recommend it to anybody who likes to read.

Thank you, Gia, for sharing with us!
