Mr. Minnch Performs Solo String Concert

As part of a series by the Performers Club, Grier Chamber Orchestra Director Mr. Mark Minnich gave a solo performance in the Auditorium on the afternoon of Thursday, March 11th. Mr. Minnich played five pieces, including two medleys, which showcased his expertise as well as the versatility of the instruments.
Mr. Minnich opened the concert by performing the Traditional Irish ballad Southwind. He followed that with what he called “the most overplayed song of the 15th century” Flow, My Tears by John Dowland for lute. The most technically difficult piece he played was an excerpt of Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto in D Minor. Mr. Minnch played a medley of two very special songs he composed himself for his son, titled Will’s Waltz/Nocturne. For the finale, Mr. Minnich brought us a transcendent medley of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah and the Led Zeppelin classic Stairway to Heaven

Mr. Minnich performed impressively, switching between the violin, a specially-strung viola, and the guitar for his pieces. While playing the stringed instruments, he operated tech equipment with his foot to alter the audio of his amplified instruments and start and stop pre-recorded accompaniment tracks. The result was a richly layered, full sound that filled the auditorium to the delight of those in attendance.

The concert was also broadcast live by GrierTV, and a link to the recording is now available.
