Teacher Spotlight: Ashleigh Stangel

Christine Fernandes
Even if you haven’t met her yet, you’ve probably been greeted indirectly by one of Grier’s newest art teachers, Ms. Ashleigh Stangel.  Her personalized welcome messages give our visitors a sense of belonging.  If you visit her classroom, you’ll be further amazed by the creations of her students.
Ms. Stangel is a local artist coming to us from State College where she worked as a teacher in The Makery giving private lessons.  She trained at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art.  She’s inspired by landscapes filled with detail and enjoys working with a variety of media, especially watercolors.

Another passion of hers involves creating art that repurposes objects.  Some examples include a student project creating self-portraits utilizing cardboard as the media in a way that emphasizes the corrugation layers to create depth and interest.  Another project turned abandoned artwork into covers for sketchbooks.  On a grander scale, look forward to the installation of Ms. Stangel’s Blue Willow mosaic.  To bring new life to chipped plates found in storage, Ms. Stangel created this mosaic using pieces of unusable chipped dinnerware.

In her free time, she enjoys cooking, hiking, crocheting large blankets, and, of course, making art!
