Spirit Week: A Time for All to Shine

Erin Guydish Buchholz, PhD
At public schools, Spirit Week is often synonymous with pep rallies and homecoming celebrations. But at a private all-girls school, spirit week hits different.

Instead of just hyping up the student body or prepping for large sporting events, Spirit Week here is a time where EVERYONE in our community comes together to celebrate our similarities, differences, and, perhaps most importantly, share a few laughs.

Monday kicked off with an oldie, but a goodie! PJ Day! Students and faculty strutted the halls in a variety of woodland creature slippers, oversized bathrobes, a few onesies, and quite a few themed PJ sets.

Tuesday saw us seeing double, or triple, or well twins plus! Students and faculty were twinning with first-floor teachers as twins plus in their black bottoms and white tops while the volleyball team played it smart wearing their jerseys!

Wednesday brought sunshine in the form of neons! Mrs. Brubaker and Mrs. Myers were two of the top teachers this day with their neon-inspired outfits. All the while, students wore their neon scrunchies, shirts, socks, and backpacks bringing a rainbow of colors to the Grier hallways mid-week.

Thursday was the highlight of the week with Bring Anything but a Backpack day. Ms. Ondrey grabbed all the attention with her wet floor cone. The hallways looked like a cross between airport terminals and IKEA with all the luggage pieces and closet organizers. Perhaps the most creative, anything-but-a-backpack choice was the baby stroller!

Friday finished our week of laughs and sharing with crazy hair and make-up day. Student Council definitely saved the best for last. At Assembly, some of our male teachers relived their glory days with full heads of wig-supplied hair and make-up provided by students. Mr. Jefferson even received a face tattoo for the day! Students arrived in classes like they had just finished filming hair and make-up tutorials, featured mismatched make-up, or like they had some crazy bedhead!

Assembly on Friday featured a recap of the week where the student body and faculty shared some cheers, “awe”’s, and quite a few laughs remembering or seeing how others participated in Spirit Week. As we started our journey, so we concluded it--making wonderful memories and enjoying one another’s company--facets of Grier’s spirit.
