Grier English Department’s Summer Reading List

School may be out, but that does not mean that Grier girls are not preparing for the upcoming school year. Returning students and new students alike are reading two or more novels as directed by Grier’s English Department so that they will be prepared to participate in thoughtful discussion, written work, or a test as soon as classes resume in September.
The required summer reading is assigned to all AP English and Honors English students. Per grade, the list includes:

INTRODUCTION TO FICTION (English 9 Honors):
Secret Life of Bees, Kidd
To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee

AMERICAN LITERATURE (English 10 Honors):
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Alexie
The Joy Luck Club, Tan

BRITISH LITERATURE (English 11 Honors):
Jane Eyre, Bronte
Rebecca, DuMaurier

WORLD LITERATURE (English 12 Honors):
Like Water for Chocolate, Esquivel
Madame Bovary, Flaubert
The Poisonwood Bible, Kingsolver

WORLD LITERATURE (English 12 AP):
Like Water for Chocolate, Esquivel
Madame Bovary, Flaubert
The Poisonwood Bible, Kingsolver
Cry, the Beloved Country, Paton

The message is clear: Honors and AP English students, you are expected to read your assigned novels. Do not delay! As William Faulkner put it, “Read, read, read.” Or, consider the words of Joseph Addison, “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”
