Honoring Black History Month
February is Black History Month, during which we celebrate achievements of Black and African-Americans in the United States and acknowledge their history of adversity. This year, Grier will pay tribute to Black Americans in a variety of ways including special classroom lessons and weekend activities.
Participants in Grier’s Beyond the Bubble initiative are planning ways for Grier to celebrate Black History month, which may include a school dance, a poetry slam, and a movie night. Bubble Talks, which began last year, are scheduled to resume in February as well and continue every two weeks. They have put together a nice resource celebrating Black women in history.
Beyond the Bubble aims to encourage personal growth by taking Grier girls outside of their normal spheres, or bubbles. Bubble Talks are town-hall style meetings where everyone is invited to listen, learn, and discuss.
The research database company ProQuest has made a collection of supporting primary sources in their Black Freedom Struggle in the United States collection available to everyone for free. Reading first-hand accounts is an excellent way for humanities courses and interested students to gain valuable insight into this time.
