Meet Grier: Edith M. '23

At Grier School, we are proud of our diverse student community and culture. This year it is our goal to highlight our Grier Girls in their own words. Our series, Meet Grier, introduces our students to our extended community while showcasing their achievements and stories.

MEET EDITH M. '23

  • Name: Edith M.
  • "Home" when you're not at Grier: Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania.
  • Year: Sophomore
  • Years Attended Grier: 2
  • Age/Grade Started at Grier: 13 years old, 9th grade

How Did you Decide to Attend Grier?

My mom knew that the school had an excellent arts program, since I loved photography and visual arts at the time. That love has continued to this day and I've learned so much through the music, arts, and academics programs.

Why do you prefer the all-girls school environment?

I prefer the all-girls school environment because it allows my peers and I to be focused on our passions and make life-long friendships, while being socially active enough to not be distracted from studies and programs.

Are you a member or officer of any clubs/organizations?

Alpha Omega (last year since it's not available this year), Select Singers, Co-Vice President of AV Club, Social Media Leaders, Cross Country Team (last year)

Do you participate in any Signature Programs or activities? Which and why do you enjoy them?

I am a part of both the arts and music programs, which I love because of the new opportunities they provide, while helping to develop skills I've already learned. I already loved photography and visual arts when starting at Grier, but I've gotten to explore even more art forms such as costume design and graphic design. It's so cool to learn new forms of art while also seeing peers and older students excel.

What has been your favorite memory or story from your time at Grier?

My favorite memory from Grier is the second to last day of school before Spring Break in 2020, when the 9th grade student government officers held a Hunger Games movie night. I was the class secretary, so it was super fun to stay late for dinner after school and set up the movie night. I remember that being a time when I felt like I really belonged at Grier, and it was so fun to spend some relaxing time with so many friends.

What are you most excited about for this year?

I am very excited to hopefully run independently in some track meets this spring, and I'm really looking forward to learning more about fashion design in Costume Design class! When I was a little kid I would always say I wanted to be a fashion designer when I grew up, so I'm excited to learn more about that profession and art form.

What is your favorite tradition at Grier and why?

I love the beautiful way in which Grier does graduation for the seniors and even though I haven't been able to be a part of the graduations yet, due to the pandemic, I can't wait to help out this year.

What advice or message would you share with future Grier Girls?

Be authentically yourself, and don't be afraid to bravely reach out toward people and opportunities! The right friends will come to you when you're chasing your dreams.

Just for fun - what is your favorite class, quote, book, recipe, movie, tv show, or podcast?

I absolutely love the Radiolab podcast!

Thank you, Edith, for sharing!
