Mr. Lang and the Excursion Club took a hike at Canoe Creek State Park on a bright and sunny, but very cold and icy day.
Even though the temperature only topped out at around 15 degrees Fahrenheit, the girls bundled up in layers and sought refuge in the forest. Following a week of virtual classes, with no trips leaving campus, the adventure in the brisk air allowed them to escape and just breathe as they wandered through crunchy snow and then made their way over rocks, past our region's historic limestone furnace ruins, to Canoe Creek Lake.
Because of constant below-freezing temperatures, the lake was frozen solid and the girls walked, skated, danced, and even just laid still on the ice, wondering in awe of nature as the sun shined on them in the calm stillness. Sometimes adventures into the elements are what can bring the most peace, even when hiding from them feels safest.
