Meet Grier Series - Meet Student Council President Laila W. ‘21!

At Grier School, we are proud of our diverse student community and culture. This year it is our goal to highlight our Grier Girls in their own words. Our new series, Meet Grier, introduces our students to our extended community while showcasing their achievements and stories.

In this Student Council Highlight, we're featuring Student Council President Laila W!

Meet Laila W. '21

  • Name: Laila W.
  • "Home" When You're Not at Grier: Marlton, New Jersey
  • Year: Senior
  • Years Attended Grier: 4
  • Age/Grade Started at Grier: 9th Grade

Why/How did you decide to attend Grier?

I decided to attend Grier because Grier offers a mix of academics and dance. I am able to go to school and dance and end my day by 5 pm leaving time for me to complete my homework. This is unique because at home I would have attended school from 7 am-2 pm and then had danced at 6 pm and not get home until 10. Following dance, I would have to complete my homework. Grier offers the perfect mix of academics and dance where I can end my day early.

Why do you prefer the all-girls school environment?

Being at an all-girls environment has allowed me to grow into a mature and confident young lady. I have gained the confidence to participate in class and become a leader in the Grier community.

Are you a member or officer of any clubs/organizations?

I am student council President, a Grier School ambassador, National Honor Society member, and in the pre-professional dance program.

Do you participate in any Signature Programs or activities? Which and why do you enjoy them?

I enjoy the pre-professional program. I love the program because I am able to do what I love and challenge myself. The teacher's expertise pushes me and helps to create an environment where I can explore artistically. In addition, the various guest artist helps me get a glimpse into the professional dance world and begin to build connections for college and professional careers..

What has been your favorite memory or story from your time at Grier?

My favorite memory from my time at Grier was when I performed at the National High School Dance Festival in Pittsburgh. It was a rewarding experience because my team and I had been working very hard to get to that point and it was the largest audience I have ever performed for.

What are you most excited about for this year?

This year I am excited to be student council president and work together with the other officers to plan fun on campus events.

What is your favorite tradition at Grier and why?

My favorite tradition at Grier is graduation because I love how special makes the seniors feel through the various events. I think it is so cute that there is a graduation dinner, musical and dance performances, candle light ceremony, and graduation ceremony spread out over the span of two days to honor and make the seniors feel special.

What advice or message would you share with future Grier Girls?

One piece of advice I would give to a future Grier Girl is to be yourself and explore all the many thing Grier has to offer.

Just for fun - what is your favorite class, quote, book, recipe, movie, tv show, or podcast?

My favorite TV show is Big Brother.

Thank you, Laila, for sharing with us!
