Canvas LMS Extends Grier Classrooms

Grier students, both those learning in-person and learning virtually from afar, are using software called Canvas LMS.  As a learning management software (LMS), Canvas provides a singular place for students to login and access information for all their Grier classes. Students can collaborate and communicate with each other and their teachers within the framework of Canvas. Additionally, Canvas is a widely popular LMS choice for schools, colleges, and universities.
Feedback from Grier students about their Canvas experience has been positive.  Students attending Grier in-person report the unexpected benefits of Canvas, such as having all the due dates, assignment details, and more available whenever needed. They find this time-saving and reassuring. Grier’s virtual students enjoy the connection Canvas gives them with Grier, their classmates, and teachers.

Thanks to the use of a shared course template, Grier Canvas courses have a similar look and feel to simplify general navigation, yet each teacher has the ability to customize the course to best suit the needs of their students.

Grier teachers use Canvas to create an extension of the physical classroom. In Canvas, Grier teachers construct modules reflecting the course content for a week, unit, or chapter. Within these modules, students are able to access assignments, discussions, quizzes, and other resources the teacher includes. Students are able to submit their homework through Canvas as well, whether that is by entering answers within the Canvas software or by uploading a separate file, such as an image or word processing file.  Students, teachers, tutors, and learning skills teachers are able to view assignment due dates, anticipate upcoming quizzes, give and receive appropriate feedback, and send messages.

Within every Grier Canvas course, teachers have included links to other important tools for learning and staying connected.  For instance, each teacher has included their Zoom links so that students can connect with the teacher via Zoom during the scheduled class time. Often, teachers will also have links to important resources like Grier’s webmail, library, IT support, and more.

Students and teachers at Grier are supported by a team of Grier Canvas Administrators and by the technical support and training provided by the Canvas parent company Instructure. The Grier Community is pleased by how well the Canvas experience is going and how positive students are finding the experience. Grier is excited to extend its devotion to the individual student with the addition of this new tool to facilitate teaching and learning through our quality academic courses.

What is Canvas?
Canvas LMS is an open and reliable web-based software that allows schools to manage digital learning, teachers to create and present online learning materials and assess student learning, and students to engage in courses and receive feedback about skill development and learning achievement.

Additionally, while Canvas is primarily a web-based software, any user can access Canvas on a mobile device from the Canvas Teacher, Canvas Student, and Canvas Parent apps.

Basic Canvas Features
Canvas includes a variety of built-in course construction and management tools that can be customized to create unique and accessible teaching and learning experiences.

Teachers can create and share course content using Assignments, Discussions, Modules, Quizzes, and Pages. They may also choose to foster a collaborative learning experience using Collaborations, Conferences, and Groups. Depending on course settings, students can access these areas in Canvas to find learning materials and interact with other course users.

Teachers can provide students with feedback on assignment and quiz submissions. They can also facilitate real-time course interactions using Chat and communicate course news and updates with students using Announcements as well as the Calendar and Syllabus.

Canvas also includes the Canvas App Center, where admins, designers, and instructors can enable a variety of Eternal Apps (LTI Tools) and services. The ever-growing app library offers a wide array of interactive resources, content repositories, assessment tools, social media integrations, and other digital learning and teaching resources.

Canvas Studio is an interactive video management platform that enhances student engagement and collaboration.
