Beyond the Bubble Hosts a Dance Party!

Friday night, Beyond the Bubble members hosted an amazing dance party for the Grier student body. The party, held during Black History Month, brought attention to the Black Lives Matter movement and issues surrounding contemporary racial injustice.

Attendees received colorful leis and glowsticks upon entry to the dance party held in Grier’s Auditorium. The DJ mixed highly danceable songs from a playlist featuring popular black musical artists, including Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Nas, and many more. The girls got down on the floor amid the colorful lights, fog, and pumping bass.
When they needed a break from the dance floor, they could visit the fun #BLM photo booth to snap a photo with a friend, enter a raffle to win gift certificates, or enjoy a drink or a snack, including freshly popped popcorn and punch!

As they danced, a slick slideshow played on the large screen above the stage, mixing iconography of the Black Lives Movement along with important terms and key concepts. The event was an excellent, engaging, and inclusive way to bring awareness to the issues.

After the raffle winners were announced, the last photos taken, and the last song played, the guests each received a special party favor: a Valentine goody bag with a special note inside.

While chaperones and club advisors were standing by to lend a hand, the impressive event was largely student-led and student organized. Beyond the Bubble members Madeline L., Elizabeth C., and Lenox B. joined the organization’s founder Simone T. in the major planning elements, including the decorations, slideshow, and lights.

Hannah N. and Nicole H. created the magnificent Black Lives Matter banner that spanned the width of the stage, the photo collage, and several other smaller signs. Amen D., Sam C., and Natalia G. were critical members of the balloon-inflating squad. The sick playlist was the handiwork of Simone T., Chantelle H., and Elizabeth C. Nguyen V. and Natalia G. took photos in the photo booth throughout the evening. Ava M., Kayla R., Petra M., Andrea Z., Mercedes C., Miranda C., and Grace C. helped with additional decorations including massive paper chains and crepe-paper streamers in the red, green, and black. The latter five also oversaw the party favors.

While the students ROCKED this event, a few adults deserve recognition as well, especially Mrs. Borst, Mrs. Carper, members of Maintenance, Housekeeping, and Dining for making the night possible. Additionally, Dr. Gb, Mrs. Woolfrey, Mrs. Reinhardt, and Mr. and Mrs. Salyards helped and chaperoned the fantastic evening.

Thank you to the Beyond the Bubble members for organizing the unforgettable evening and to all the students in attendance who helped make the Black Lives Matter Dance Party a huge success!
