Meet Grier: Amber Y. '21

At Grier School, we are proud of our diverse student community and culture. This year it is our goal to highlight our Grier Girls in their own words. Our series, Meet Grier, introduces our students to our extended community while showcasing their achievements and stories.

MEET AMBER Y. '21

  • Name: Amber Y.
  • "Home" when you're not at Grier: Altoona, Pennsylvania
  • Year: Senior
  • Years Attended Grier: 5
  • Age/Grade Started at Grier: age 12, 8th grade

How Did you Decide to Attend Grier?

I wanted to have the experience of an International School, along with the fact that my middle school/junior high closed before I could graduate from it.

Why do you prefer the all-girls school environment?

Personally, I prefer the all-girls school environment because there are less conflicts to distract from classwork. I also enjoy the ability to learn how girls are treated and act depending on where they are from. I love the experience that comes from going to school with all girls and just understanding that women everywhere have similar issues and similar interests.

Are you a member or officer of any clubs/organizations?

I am a member of Garden Club, Astronomy Club, Kaleidoscope Club, and am a cofounder of Board Games Club. I have also been a member of Knitting Club and Excursion Club in the past.

Do you participate in any Signature Programs or activities? Which and why do you enjoy them?

I participate in Archery and have participated in Choir for almost all of my Grier career. Archery is wonderful and I enjoy this activity because it gives everyone time to learn to shoot a bow for fun. This sport helps learn that a bow can be a fun pass time while teaching us to shoot without any assistance from sights. It also gives us all time to hang out and just talk.

I have participated in choir up until this final semester of school due to health concerns and the COVID situation, but I love this activity. Singing has always been a stress relief for me, so being able to share music with other people who also love music has been such a joy.

What has been your favorite memory or story from your time at Grier?

My favorite memory from Grier, was being a new student on my first day of school. Most of the girls in my grade had already been at Grier for a year and all knew each other, but when I walked into Wren's Nest (which was our day student lounge at the time) all these girls that I knew nothing about welcomed me as if they had known me forever. That is one of the my personally favorite things about Grier, everyone is welcomed into the family whether they join in the beginning of the journey or at the end of it.

What are you most excited about for this year?

I think, this year, I am most excited about graduation. I know that this year's seniors are going to have a different experience than past years, but I think that of all the stuff we are missing, graduation will still be one of the best moments of the year.

What is your favorite tradition at Grier and why?

My favorite tradition at Grier, was our meet your teacher assembly. We did not get to have that this year, but it was always fun to see the ways that our teachers would introduce themselves based on what department they are from.

What advice or message would you share with future Grier Girls?

I would give future girls the advice to be patient, take time to have some fun, and do not be afraid to ask for help. The teachers are all here to help and they often love it when you ask questions because it means you are trying to understand what they are teaching you.

Just for fun - what is your favorite class, quote, book, recipe, movie, tv show, or podcast?

My favorite quote is by Eleanor Roosevelt. "A woman is like a tea bag - you can't tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water."

Thank you, Amber, for sharing!
