Senior Samantha Cohen Chosen as National Merit Scholarship Finalist

Keri Salyards
Samantha "Sam" Cohen, Grier class of 2022, has been selected as a finalist for the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Award.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) created the award in 1955 to recognize academic achievement and personal accomplishments, hoping to "encourage the pursuit of academic excellence" in those who received the award. Nearly 1.5 million students across America enter the National Merit Scholarship Program every year, and only about 8,500 are chosen as finalists to receive scholarships for their college undergraduate studies.

Finalists must have a consistently high academic performance record in grades 9 through 12, receive a high score on the PSAT/NMSQT test in their 11th grade year, and earn a high score on the SAT or ACT to corroborate that PSAT score. They must also write a personal essay in which they describe their own activities, volunteer service, leadership positions, and any honors and awards they may have received.

On February 15, Sam was awarded her official Certificate of Merit from the NMSC and notified of her status as a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. NMSC will announce the official winners of the National Merit Scholarships in March.

Miss Cohen's academic career at Grier has been stellar, but she has plans far beyond our school. She hopes to major in medical humanities or biology, with the end goal of becoming a neurosurgeon. Having had the pleasure of teaching her both AP United States History and AP European History, this particular teacher is so happy to see her incredible accomplishments recognized, and I have no doubt that she will move on into a bright future. We are so proud of you, Sam!
