Rock Fest '22

Tony Lang
After a three-year hiatus, Grier’s band was able to return to form and hold its annual Rock Fest, a live music concert that is not only a display of the hard work of our many club members but also an exciting event, where every student dresses up to go to a real rock show and the energy shared between the performers and audience is palpable.
Throughout the school year, club members met every Friday afternoon in order to practice songs from different genres and different generations. After difficult weather caused so many practices to be canceled, the group adapted and rescheduled in order to hold a few more practices and nail down the pieces they would showcase at Rock Fest. Different vocalists handled different songs, from Grace taking the lead on the opener, Taylor Swift’s “Love Story,” to Hannah’s raucous versions of “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” and “Jolene,” to Iris’ mellow version of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” that built to an energetic rocker, to the calm, but powerful “Stand by Me,” led by Debbie. All of the vocalists backed each other at different moments until the culminating anthem, “Don’t Stop Believin’,” which everyone in the building sang in unison. Hannah and Grace also worked up individual pieces, and the instrumentalists were the backbone of every show and brought the energy for each piece. Levi held it down on the bass, Rebe locked in on the drums, Estella added depth with the keyboard, and Anna added layers of melody and solos on the violin. Mr. Minnich and Mr. Lang helped hold everything together on the keyboard and guitar.  From the first song, the audience pushed toward the stage, singing and dancing, soaking up the energy and giving support and praise to their peers onstage, once again, proving that, at Grier, everyone is welcome to come as you are!
