Spanish Students Enjoy Trips to DC, Pittsburgh

¡Pasándola bien! Students in Srta. Leen’s Spanish classes are having a great time developing their appreciation for Spanish language and culture. In addition to the induction of new members into the Spanish Language Honor Society earlier this month, Spanish students recently saw Spanish works of art in the National Gallery and experienced the Hispanic Flamenco Ballet in Pittsburgh.
Srta. Leen and a group of intermediate and advanced level Spanish students, joined by Mme. Pope and her French students, took a weekend day trip to Washington D.C., where they toured the National Gallery of Art. The museum features works of art from around the world, including works by famous Spanish artists such as Picasso, El Greco, Diego Velazquez and Francisco de Goya. French artists of note included Van Gogh, Monet, and Cezanne. There was a special exhibit about Cezanne and a new mosaic by Chagall in the Sculpture Garden. The students enjoyed exploring the gallery and dining on flavorful Spanish tapas at Bodega in Georgetown, while a French bakery named PAUL offered an array of decadent delights.

On Monday, Spanish students traveled with Srta. Leen to see the Hispanic Flamenco Ballet performed in Pittsburgh. The traveling Flamenco Ballet Company’s production featured the dance styles of multiple Hispanic nations of the Caribbean and Central and South America. Dancers sported both traditional and contemporary costumes and danced to music performed by live musicians. The numbers included Cumbia and Salsa Calena (Colombia), Samba (Brazil), La Marinera (Peru), Jarabe Tapatio (Mexico), Tango, Malambo, and Chacarera (Argentina), Bachata and Merengue (Dominican Republic), plus Chancleteo and Carnival folk dances (Cuba). Grier’s Cali D. was even invited on stage during the finale!

Srta. Leen and her fellow teachers in the Modern Language Department have so much to offer their students as they gain the invaluable knowledge of another language and appreciation of a different culture through its art, history, music, dance, and food.
