Birds and Blooms Throughout Campus

Surrounded by woodlands, Grier’s mountainside campus is a great place to connect with nature. While visiting Grier’s campus this spring, Mr. Geoffrey Grier has enjoyed reconnecting with nature. He has helped construct and erect bluebird nesting boxes with a group of Mrs. Fernandes’ students, and he led an effort to bring new life to campus flowerbeds.
Mr. Geoffrey Grier is the elder son of Board of Trustees President Dr. Douglas Grier. Mr. Geoffrey Grier, who has worked in Hong Kong’s financial industry for years, has been enjoying time with family and Grier’s campus this spring.

Last week, Mr. Grier joined students Tanya S. and Debbie to install six nesting boxes around campus. Two boxes are located near the soccer field, two more by the large upper parking lot, and two more at faculty houses. Mrs. Fernandes joyfully reported that tree swallows had already decided to make their home in one of the nesting boxes just days after installation.

This week, Mr. Grier recruited Learning Skills teacher Mrs. Shelly Davis and Science teacher Mrs. Christine Fernandes to help spruce up flower beds throughout campus with flowers and plants purchased from a local nursery.  The work included beds at the koi pond, near the science building, and by the main entrance. Once completed, the beds were lush with green hostas, pink phlox, peachy begonias, and other flowers of white, purple, and blue.

The blooms will attract pollinators and the nesting boxes will attract desirable native birds, so the projects are not only beautiful, but beneficial to our regional ecology.
