Students Experience U.S. History During Trip to Gettysburg

The Battle of Gettysburg is considered the Civil War's bloodiest battle, but the Union victory is considered a major turning point. The students visited the Enduring Peace Monument erected in 1935 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, a monument honoring Pennsylvania soldiers, and a visit to Little Round Top. In addition to the battlefields and monuments, the park features a Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center. In Gettysburg National Cemetery, a monument marks the site of Abraham Lincoln’s famous 1863 Gettysburg Address. The victory at Gettysburg inspired Lincoln’s iconic speech about freedom and equality and preserved the memories of the brave soldiers who fought and died for these principles.

While Gettysburg is a site that could evoke reverence and quiet contemplation, the tour guide maintained a lively and engaging approach to history and kept the students’ interest levels high. It was a beautiful day to visit the site. The students had a great time while enriching their understanding of the American Civil War.
