Grier Science Faculty members have been busy planning and organizing field trips and hands-on events for students, including events that partner with area universities. Recently, Science Club toured Saint Francis University science facilities, including a cadaver lab. Ambassador engineers from Penn State University's Engineering Outreach Program visited the Grier for a day of interactive engineering activities.
Science Club Visits Saint Francis University Cadaver Lab & Science Facilities
Members of Grier's Science Club toured the science facilities at Saint Francis University. In addition to visiting the new science building, checking out the facilities, and learning about on-going research, students toured the human cadaver lab where they learned about the process of obtaining bodies for medical research and eduction. The university has adopted a hands-on approach to learning and students learn anatomy by studying human cadavers that have been donated through the Human Gift Registry in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The Science Department Faculty members at Grier organize and chaperon a variety of monthly events for student members. An upcoming event planned includes a visit from an environmental engineer and a petroleum engineer.
PSU Engineering Ambassadors Visit Grier for Engineering Day
The same week, the Grier Science Department hosted two engineer abassadors from Penn State University's College of Engineering Outreach program. The ambassadors addressed aspects of bioengineering, electrical engineering, and more. Engineers demonstrated some of the processes involved in developing prosthetic devices and giving students the opportunity to try it out themselves. In other classes, students used Makey-Makey technology to connect fruit to circuit boards and transform the fruit into musical instruments. Other students usesd the conductive ink of Circuit Scribes to create paths to power LED lights and buzzers. Students learned about the Lifesaver Bottle that is designed to filter nanoparticles from water and engineered their own versions. The Penn State Engineering ambassors also answered student questions and spoke about careers in engineering.
