Grier Students Honor Victims with Walkout

The event commenced with a moment of silence for the victims of gun violence in schools. Following the moment of silence, students voiced their frustration with the government response to the issue by issuing a roaring yell. Annie G. gave a speech about the issue and invited students to contact their legislators. She provided form letters and additional information for contacting congressional representatives. History teacher, Mrs. Salyards, encouraged civic engagement as well, providing eligible students with voter registration information. Grace C. distributed orange ribbons. Cali D. and Connie M. made a poster adorned with orange balloons. Mr. Pingry read a Bob Dylan’s 1963 work “Masters of War.” A group of choir students sang a round of Dona Nobis Pacem (Give Us Peace). The mic was left open for others to share their stories and experiences.

Although the event commemorated a somber event, the general mood was supportive, hopeful, and empowering. The peaceful walkout concluded at the start of the next period, when students returned to class.
