And There Was Much Rejoicing for Grier’s Spamalot!

Grier delighted audiences with the eagerly anticipated production of Monty Python’s Spamalot. Grier’s production of Spamalot, the musical “lovingly ripped off from” the British sketch comedy troupe’s 1970s film Monty Python and the Holy Grail was a laugh-out-loud, zany trip for audiences of friends, family, and teachers on Friday, April 27th and Saturday, April 28th on Grier’s campus
The story is based on Arthurian legend, where King Arthur with Excalibur in hand, seeks the Holy Grail, a relic from the Biblical Last Supper. In this quirky retelling, abounding with quintessential Python tropes, Arthur recruits a band of knights to join him and his coconut-clacking squire Patsy, including “Sir Lancelot, The Homicidally Brave; Sir Robin, the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir-Lancelot; Sir Dennis Gallahad, The Dashingly Handsome; and Sir Bedevere, The Strangely Flatulent.” During their quest, they encounter many strange characters, including the Knights Who Say Ni, a damsel in distress who turns out to be a young prince named Herbert, and several lewd French knights who lob both insults and livestock at the Knights of the Round Table. Throughout the journey, the Lady of the Lake guides Arthur and the Knights, while reveling in the limelight of the stage. Eventually, the Knights find the (metaphorical) grail and the show ends with a Broadway wedding and an encore of the famous Python earworm “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.”

This year, in addition to the two evening shows, Grier provided a Thursday afternoon preview show to students and teachers. Through three full performances, the actors maintained the high level of energy necessary to pull off the quirky comedy. They worked through the unexpected and carried on like true stage professionals, never missing a beat. The musicians and singers sounded wonderful. The dancers were as fabulous as ever, fully embracing the element of comedy. During each performance, an angel selected an audience member and pulled them on stage. On Thursday, Linnea K. had this privilege, with Head of School Mrs. Gina Borst being the lucky one on Friday night, and history teacher Mr. Steven Packnick receiving the honor on Saturday.

The Grier musical is always a special event, not only because it is wonderfully entertaining, but because it is the product of massive collaboration between our many talented students and faculty members across the Instrumental and Vocal Music, Dance, and Art Departments. Along with the stage manager, lighting and sound technicians, costumes, and prop crews behind the scenes, actors, singers, dancers, and musicians work together to produce a successful show. The musical allows many to develop their musical theatre skills by stepping outside their comfort zone, with dancers doing some singing and singers doing some dancing, for instance.

Hearty congratulations to all involved in the production!
