Striker and the Creature Teacher Visit Grier

Grier's Science Department invited a very special guest for a return visit to campus. Striker, a 16 year-old saker falcon stopped by for our Grier students to see in person during Extra Help. Students had the opportunity to see the falcon up close. Striker and his handler, “Creature Teacher” Jody Wallace from the Blair County Conservation District, helped students learn more about falcon adaptations. Wallace even compared Striker's feathers to those of her chicken, Butterscotch.
Falcons are the fastest animals, traveling at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour when in a dive. Fun Fact: A falcon sitting in a tree at Grier School would be able to see a pigeon sitting on a tree in Tyrone! Saker falcons are migratory birds native to the Middle East, Russia, and Africa. Wallace also shared some ways in which we can help protect the habits of birds of prey like Striker. The biggest thing we can do, suggests Wallace, is to consume less energy! We can do this by turning off the lights, layering instead of pumping up the heat, conserving water, re-using things instead of throwing them away, not wasting food, and making conscientious purchases. These actions help preserve habitats for animals by reducing pollution and global warming. Wallace says she likes the phrase, “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and REFUSE!”  Refuse to waste energy and refuse to have a high carbon footprint.  Healthy ecosystems start at the bottom with us.

Wallace and her husband, a Master Falconer, raise falcons and other birds on their farm in Sinking Valley. Wallace works with a lot of local organizations like the Little River Association, Fort Roberdeau, and The Tryone Garden Club to restore native plants, build rain gardens and pollinator gardens, teach about living sustainably, remove invasive species, and preserve habitats.
